Yesterday (2024 July 17), the record of the world's highest selling dinosaur fossil was broken. This Stegosaurus dinosaur fossil known as "APEX" sold for a record price of 44.6 million dollars at an auction in America yesterday.
The record was previously held by a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton known as "Stan" which sold for a whopping $31.8 million at Christie's in New York in October 2022.
Stan is one of the most complete and well-preserved T. Rex skeletons ever discovered. It is 39 feet long and 13 feet high. The skeleton consists of 188 original bones, with several additional casts made to complete the missing bones.

The Apex fossil, which was sold yesterday, is a fossil of Stegosaurus, a herbivorous dinosaur that lived between 161 and 146 million years ago in the late Jurassic period.
It was discovered by a man named Jason Cooper in May 2022 on his private land in Colorado, United States.
Measuring 11 feet tall and 27 feet long, this dinosaur fossil is 79-85% bone fragments and is one of the most complete Stegosaurus fossils ever found. Scientists believe that Stegosaurus used its dangerous tail spikes to fight, but the specimen may have died of natural causes, as the specimen shows no signs of combat and the skeleton shows signs of arthritis.
However, the recent sale of perfect dinosaur fossils at high prices has created some debate in the scientific community. They argue that private ownership of these valuable dinosaur fossils hinders their public display and educational display. As such, museums generally do not have the financial resources to compete with wealthy collectors, who may hinder scholarly study and public access, a major problem in the field today.
