The Most Powerful Bomb ever Tested "Tsar"
Did you think that the most powerful bomb in the world was the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima? If you were thinking like that, stop thinking like that after today. Because Hiroshima looks like a child in the hands of the most powerful bomb that has been tested in the world for so long. This is called Tsar. This is the story..
You have heard of the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Russia after World War II. This is not a war fought with weapons because it was called the Cold War to show itself as the world's power. It was mainly based on political, economic and propaganda fronts.
So the Tsar bomb, which was born as a result of this cold war, was built in 1961 by a team including Soviet physicist Andrey Sakhrov.
This bomb, known as Tsar or Big Ivan, was proposed to be created with a strength of 100 megatons of TNT at the initial stage of its design, but due to the great damage that can be caused by a bomb with such strength, its capacity has been reduced to 50 megatons of TNT. Even if it is reduced so much, this bomb is 3333 times stronger than the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.
Designed to weigh 27 tons, 26 feet (8 meters) long and 7 feet (2 meters) in diameter, this bomb is officially known as RDS-220.
Also, a Tu-95V bomber was modified to carry the weapon, equipped with a special parachute that slows its fall, allowing the aircraft to fly a safe distance from the explosion.
The plane piloted by pilot Andrey Durnovtsev took off from the Kola Peninsula on October 30, 1961 to test this bomb and an additional observation plane was attached to it.
At approximately 11:32 a.m. Moscow time that day, the Tsar bomb was dropped over the Mityushikha Bay test site on Novaya Zemlya, a deserted island in the Arctic Ocean, and exploded about 2.5 miles (4 km) above the ground, more than 37 miles (60 km) away. A tall mushroom cloud has formed. And this explosion has been seen at a distance of about 620 miles (1,000 km). Imagine how much damage this would have caused.
Severny, an uninhabited village 34 miles (55 km) from where the bomb landed, was completely leveled. Also, it is reported that even buildings located more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) away have been damaged by the bomb. In addition, it is estimated that the heat of the explosion could cause third-degree burns up to 62 miles (100 km) away.
But even though this bomb blast was successful, the Tsar bomb was never used for military operations. Due to its huge damage and its size, the bomb cannot be deployed by a ballistic missile. Instead, the bomb had to be transported by conventional aircraft. It's a habit at that time. Because at that time there were no radar-evading planes that exceeded the speed of sound, the enemy could easily capture the plane before the bomb reached the target. Because of this, the Tsar considers the bomb as a propaganda weapon.
And since the 1961 explosion, Sakharov has restricted nuclear testing underground. The restrictions have been removed from an agreement signed by the United States, Britain and Soviet Russia in 1963.. I will post another photo showing what the most powerful bombs that have been tested so far look like in a comment below. Be sure to check it out. The Hiroshima atomic bomb has been enlarged because you can't see it.
