Donald Trump Breaks Vatican Dress Code at Pope Francis' Funeral, Sparks Controversy
Vatican City — April 26, 2025
Former US President Donald Trump has drawn global attention for breaking the traditional dress code at the Vatican for the funeral of Pope Francis.
President Trump stood out in a mid-blue suit and matching blue tie, as Vatican authorities had mandated a dark suit (preferably black), a black tie and a black button on the left lapel as official protocol for the funeral in St. Peter's Basilica, which was attended by world leaders, royalty and dignitaries.
President Trump's departure from tradition has quickly become a trending topic on social media, with critics accusing Trump of disrespecting the solemnity of the occasion. In contrast, former President Joe Biden and Prince William were also in attendance, wearing darker colors than expected, but Biden also chose blue.
Despite the controversy, Trump's front-row seat among world leaders has also drawn criticism.
However, First Lady Melania Trump strictly adhered to Vatican protocol. She wore a long black dress, black gloves and a lace mantilla veil, and was praised for her dignified appearance.
Meanwhile, some commentators suggested that Trump's blue suit did not technically violate diplomatic norms, but others argued that the symbolism of the dress code should be respected during such a momentous event.
President Trump has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
The funeral of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88, drew millions of mourners around the world and marked the end of a transformative papacy that lasted more than a decade.
